Hannahs Factory could well be the tastiest lane in the world. Situated in central Wellington (in between Leeds St and Eva St), this scrumptious walkway may be tiny but it doesn’t half pack a punch.
Let’s start with the Fix and Fogg boutique peanut butter shop. This could well be the tiniest manufacturer I’ve ever laid eyes on – blink and you’ll miss it. It’s tucked away in the corner and operates out of this little window.
This superb little ‘nut buttery’ creates four varieties of peanut butter, a mixture of traditional; smooth and super crunchy as well as two contemporary options; smoke and fire (for those who like a kick) and dark chocolate which is dangerously delicious. You are welcome to sample all four to ensure you make the right choice -my favourite was the good old fashioned crunchy option. If you are a peanut butter maniac make sure you head here during your time in windy Welly or alternatively order online:
R Hannah & Co was founded by Irish born Robert Hannah in 1870. A large factory was built at Lambton Quay and due to its success was later followed by this smaller factory which opened in the 1930’s.
In 1995 it was decided that both R Hannah’s buildings would be refurbished into rental property. Today they are sought after student accommodation in one of the towns most quirky locations.
That’s enough of that, I’ll get back to the food. If you’re not a peanut butter guy or gal surely you must love chocolate?
Hannah’s Factory is also home to the Wellington Chocolate Factory where you can see the complete bean to bar process or just grab a cheeky hot chocolate.
If you need time to digest the copious amounts of peanut butter and chocolate, Six Barrel Soda is the perfect place; situated at the entrance of the lane way. Flavours include feijoa, blueberry, fennel and celery tonic.
If none of these tickle your taste buds then firstly you are crazy and secondly, you’re in luck, Hannah’s Factory is also home to Pizza Pomodoro, Leeds St Bakery (apparently the salted caramel cookies are to die for), a brilliant cocktail bar called the Hanging Ditch or if you’re into craft beer then there’s Goldings Free Dive. Enjoy 😉
