Milford Sound can be a total wash out on a rainy day but if it’s fine it can be one of the most remarkable New Zealand experiences you’ll have. Luckily for us, it was a perfectly crisp winters day.
I hate to be fussy but technically it isn’t a sound, it’s a fjord. Fjords are carved out by glacier sculpture and Sounds are created by river erosion, both of which are then backfilled by the rising ocean.
This is Fairy Falls. Our guide mentioned that these were named after the Welsh rugby team (last night the All Blacks thrashed us in the first test match). As you can imagine there was a lot of banter on board.
Spot the seals.
Luke tried to fill his water bottle from this mammoth waterfall.
He ended up filling his boots instead.
The ‘sound’ is totally magical, I’m so glad we got the chance to experience it in all its glory.
